The then ten year old devastated Joe Armstrong had told his mother after the funeral: "Wake me up, when September ends".The song reached No. 6 in the U.S. (Green Days´second Top 10 single), No. 8 in Canada and the U.K., and No. 13 in Australia. The video ends in emphasizing the pain and heartache of losing ones dear due to war. The song became a tribute song to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and was performed live before the first game in the New Orleans Superdome after Katrina.
