The Beatles reigned supreme from their formation in Liverpool in 1957 to their eventual break-up in 1970. One of the curiosities about the Beatles is that neither John Lennon nor Paul McCartney were the first to score a "solo" number one album after the group's demise. Instead it was George Harrison with All Things Must Pass.

The furore that followed the Beatles was called Beatlemania which The Daily Mirror came up with in 1963. At just before three minutes in Hey Jude, Paul McCartney can just be heard expleting "Oh, fucking hell" after he made a simple mistake during the recording.
