Sonny is both a colossus of jazz and a real character. He started out his musical career on the piano and then switched to the alto, then tenor saxophone but also plays the soprano saxophone. In a fully lived life, he has served a three year prison sentence, albeit for only ten months of it, for armed robbery and has played with jazz giants including Jackie McLean, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk.
Sonny has continued playing into his 80s. On the 16th November 2012, at 82 years of age, he stepped onto the stage at the Barbican in London. Hunched over, shuffling but sporting a shock of white hair and a mischievous smile, he enthralled, delighted and amazed the audience (including this author) with his vitality, variation, dexterity and the beautiful sound emanating from his saxophone.
