The Can-Can is in fact a tune called “Galop” from the operetta “Orpheus in the Underworld” by the French Composer Jacques Offenbach. The piece is also known as the “Infernal Galop” (Galop infernal). A Can-Can in itself is a suggestive French dance performed by a chorus line of female dancers wearing petticoats and long stockings. The Can-Can is set in 2/4 time and originated in the in music halls of France, but could also be found in less salubrious surroundings (including the Moulin Rouge). These days the Gallop from Orpheus in the Underworld is mostly associated with the dance “Can-can”, and consequently, the piece itself has become known as “The Can-Can”.
