Lyricist: Joseph Mohr, John F. Young
Silent Night is a traditional Christmas carol. Silent Night was written by Franz Gruber, and the lyrics were composed by Josef Mohr. Both were Austrians, and the original title set to the sheet music of Silent Night was Stille Nacht (which translates as "quiet night"). Silent Night was composed in 1818, though the lyrics were written two years earlier than that. It appears that Franz Gruber approached Josef Mohr with the finished lyrics, asking him to write a melody for them. The tune was first performed by the two in 1818 on Christmas Eve in the St. Nikolaus Kirche (St. Nicholas church) in Oberndorf, Salzburg. Since then Silent night has been translated into over 100 languages, and remains one of the most popular Christmas carols of all time.
