Shenandoah is an American folk song that originated in the early nineteenth century as a land ballad in the areas of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, with a story of a trader who fell in love with the daughter of the Indian Chief, Shenandoah. It is an enchanting song that was adopted by the sailors plying the rivers with their trade.

The song reached its first height of popularity a little before the 1840s, the beginning of the fast clipper ship era that added so much to American growth. The song was traditional with the U.S. Army cavalry who called it "The Wild Mizzourye."

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, you rollin’ river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, we’re bound away
Across the wide Missouri
