Polly Wolly Doodle appears to have been popularised by Daniel Decatur Emmett's Virginia Minstrels. Daniel Decatur Emmett's (1815 - 1904) was an American singer and songwriter of Irish descent. The origin of Polly Wolly Doodle however remains a mystery with some sources pointing towards its origins being a song sung by slaves in the south. The song is a popular children's song today.
