The original lyrics for Oh! Susanna were written by Stephen Foster in 1847.

Oh, Susanna,
Oh don't you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my banjo on my knee

It was later given new lyrics and became known as the "forty-niners" theme song and this version was sung by miners during the California Gold Rush.

Oh, Susannah, Oh, don't you cry for me
I'm going to California with my washpan on my knee.
