This is a traditional Scottish folk song which may have its origin in the history of Charles Edward Stuart, commonly known as Bonny Prince Charlie who was the grandson of the deposed Stuart monarch James II. Bonny Prince Charlie attempted to restore the Stuarts to the English throne in 1745-46 by invading Scotland and England. What a nice chap.
