  • Nationality: German
  • 10th November 1483 - 18th February 1546
  • You may know him for: starting the Protestant reformation, translating the Bible into German

Martin Luther is not primarily known as a composer, yet his hymns invigorated congregational singing in protestant churches. By leading the counter-reformation against the Roman Catholic Church his place in Western history is assured. His translation of the entire bible into German, and his 95 theses (which he famously nailed to a church door in the German town of Wittenberg) condemning the Roman Catholic Church's greediness are two of the most important events in the history of the church.
