Jimmy Perry is, in many minds, a legend for writing the TV sitcom Dad's Army with David Croft. This was based on his personal experience in the Home Guard during the second World War. He would have been just 16 when the war started on 1st September 1939 so not eligible at that time for National Service. However, 2 years later, he found himself on the way to Burma following his enrloment.

Perry said that he came up with the three main characters, Captain Mainwaring, Sergeant Wilson and Private Pike after watching the film comedy 'Oh Mr Porter' starring Will Hay.

There was much more to Perry than that though, as he also co-wrote the very successful It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi! and You Rang, M'Lord? with David Croft.
