Hailey is a quirky, fun, cool jazz singer from Austin, Texas. She loved musical theatre when growing up. She attended a Baptist Military boarding school and was cast as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. However, the casting director said he wanted to give her a tip: he'd only cast her because he loved hearing her sing Over the Rainbow and said she had a lovely, jazzy voice and you should give up on musical theatre. And anyway, he continued, you're a terrible actress.

Her route to becoming a jazz singer is extraordinary. She had read the autobiography by Louise Brooks called Lulu in Hollywood. Louise was a girl from the middle of nowhere who moved to Europe and led a crazy, party life. Using funds that were marked for paying for her time through college, she bought an air ticket to Paris when she was 18 with just the notion of becoming a jazz singer. She headed across town in a taxi and the driver asked what she was doing in the City. Having told him, he said if she could sing "La Vie en Rose" in French the cab fare would be free. As she says, "tragique" for him she was more than capable of doing so.

She wandered the streets, and took bus rides and, as an attractive and vulnerable young girl was probably at some risk. A chance meeting on a bus occurred when a girl started speaking to her in English. She asked why and she explained she always spoke English and if people couldn't understand then she just yelled. She was a burlesque dancer and introduced Hailey to the underground scene of Paris. They became friends and, when Hailey needed somewhere to stay, she said she could stay with her where she was house sitting - a house of a Count and Countessa - on the couch. One evening, whilst a party was in full swing, Hailey was sitting on the couch and a very elegant lady sat next to her. Hailey mentioned that that was her bed and the lady mentioned that it was her house. She was not best pleased but when Hailey said she was a jazz singer she said she could stay if she got on the piano and sung. Naked. Hailey agreed and the Countessa dressed her in a nude art-deco outfit and she sung "I'll Be Seeing You". She let her stay and started introducing Hailey to people for events. Hailey says the moral of that story is to get naked on tables.

Hailey has openly, on stage and in interview, said she is totally in love with Jarvis Cocker and sings Underwear, a Pulp song, on her album Junk. She romanticised that she might meet Jarvis in a record shop and they would fall in love. She has said it so many times that she suspects Jarvis has a restraining order on her.
