Gerry Marsden started the 1960's band with his brother Fred. They called it Gerry Marsden and the Mars Bars but the confectionery company The Mars Company complained so they changed. It's difficult to see how you go from Mars Bars to Pacemakers but they managed it.

The band were extremely successful and were rivals to the Beatles in their early years. They were the first act to reach number 1 in the UK Singles Chart with each of their first 3 singles in 1963 and 1964: How Do You Do It, I Like It and Ferry 'Cross the Mersey.

Their success was short lived and they split up in 1966
