Eva Cassidy was a painter and landscaper who came to music relatively late, in her late twenties. She released her first album at the age of 29 and it was called The Other Side. The album consisted of a set of duets with Chuck Brown. A few years later she released a live solo album, Live at Blues Alley. During this time she had little notoriety outside of the United States.

Eva achieved posthumous acclaim some 4 years after her early death in 1996 from cancer (melanoma). Terry Wogan played Over the Rainbow on Radio 2 and her beautiful voice caught the attention of the listeners. This prompted a compilation album, Songbird, of her work to be compiled and released to great international success. She had a beautiful voice, a gentle touch and a soothing tone.
