De L'Isle was not a celebrated composer, but an engineer in the army. In 1792, after France had declared war on Austria and Prussia, he had been asked by the mayor of the French city of Strasbourg to write a marching tune for the troops. Apart from publishing a book of French songs, de L'Isle's musical output seems confined to having penned the French National Anthem. |
