The British Grenadiers Sheet Music
Artist and Writer: Traditional |
The British Grenadiers is one of the most recognizable regimental
marches s one of the most recognizable regimental marches. It was
played by the grenadier units of the British forces and remains popular
to this day with most military marching bands. The first known
performance was by The Redcoats during the battle at Brandywine in
September 1777. The actual tune appears to have originated from a piece
entitled "The New Bath", which can be found in one of John Playford's
dance books dating from the 1600's. "The British Grenadiers" was famously
adapted for the theme tune of the popular BBC comedy series “Blackadder
Goes Forth” featuring Rowan Atkinson. "The British Grenadiers" is mostly
played as an instrumental march; it does however have (rather
bellicose) lyrics. Here is the first verse:
Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules;
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these;
But of all the world's braves heroes, there's none that can compare
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.
