Shortnin Bread Sheet Music
Artist and Writer: Traditional |
It may not be immdediately obvious that Shortnin Bread is shortbread, a sweet confectionary, but when you hear the lyric "Mammy's L'il Baby Loves Shortnin' Bread" you get a hint. "Shortnin' Bread" was a Negro plantation song (an Afro-American traditional called "la manière nègre") that enjoyed a revival during the golden days of the radio. Lawrence Tibbett made a famous recording of it and he became a national legend through several films in which he appeared as the hero, and he was a significant force in early American radio. The song featured in the movie "Maytime" (MGM, 1937).
