Hornpipe (HWV 349) Sheet Music
also known as (from Water Music, Suite in D major/Wassermusik, Suite in D-Dur) Sheet Music Artist and Writer: Georg Friedrich Händel (also known as George Frideric Frederick Handel) |
Hornpipe is taken from Handel's Suite in D major which was composed for Charles I of England. The premier of this piece is now legendary. Three barges, one just to carry fifty musicians, were used to ferry King Charles and other English nobility from the Palace of Whitehall to Chelsea for a party. It is reported that the king liked the music so much, he requested it be played three times during the trip. It is likely that the fact that the music was premiered on barges on the river Thames gave the piece the name Water Music.
