God Rest You Merry Gentlemen (a.k.a. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) is a popular Christmas Carol. It was first published in 1833 in the book Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern. The music probably dates back to the Middle Ages, and the authors of both the text and the music of God Rest You Merry Gentlemen remain unknown. As the lyrics are written in Early Modern English, i.e. the English used in the King James Bible for example, they are somewhat confusing. The opening line, for example actually means “God Keep You Gentlemen Strong.” The mood of God Rest You Merry Gentlemen is probably the most sombre of all Christmas tunes - it is one of the few written in a minor key. Here is the first verse:

God rest ye merry gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
