This popular song, the words of which were penned by Robert Burns, is used all over the United Kingdom to welcome in the New Year. The opening lines are known by almost everyone but it gets a little tricker after that:

The title "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago" although it is better translated as "time gone by".
