His popularity increased with his ballad The Erl-King, and was Schubert’s first Lied. His hymn Ave Maria (1825) (not to be confused with the tune of the same name bu Gounod) is his probably most popular composition. Schubert died in 1827 when aged 30, and was buried, following his own wish, near Beethoven. |
