Il Prete Rosso, named for his red hair, composed vocal and violin individual pieces and concertos in the Italian baroque style. His most famous concerto is The Four Seasons, an uplifting set of compositions made famous in more recent years by the very skilled, but unorthodox, Nigel Kennedy.

Vivaldi's music was popular during his lifetime and earned him a representative income. However, following his death interest waned but was revived in the late 20th century making him one of the most popular and well recorded baroque composers.

Vivaldi was an individualistic composer, writing concertos and arias which were often brighter, lighter and easier to listen to than his peers. So respected was his work that great contemporaries such as Johann Sebastian Bach adopted some of his ideas and worked them into their works.
