The Last Night of the Proms

The Last Night of the Proms is the final night of the Proms concerts that take place every year during the summer in London.

Originating in 1895, the concerts have grown in number and stature to international renown. The Proms are also known as the BBC Proms, and the The Sir Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC.

Sir Henry Wood was the conductor at the first ever Proms concert (the event was arranged by Robert Newman, an impresario), and he created the "feel" of the Proms by presenting less demanding works. The Proms are most widely associated with the “Last Night of the Proms”, an event that is televised worldwide. During the Last Night of the Proms a popular mix of patriotic English music is performed, this usually includes:

Other pieces, such as Edward Elgar’s Pomp And Circumstance March No. 4 and Nimrod (from Enigma Variations) are also widely associated with The Last Night of the Proms. During Land of Hope and Glory (which is the middle section of Edward Elgar’s Pomp And Circumstance March No.1), the audience usually sings along, and many audience members can be seen bobbing up in down in the standing area in front of the orchestra. The atmosphere of The Last night of the Proms is quite unique, in that there is quite a party-atmosphere, with people waving flags and balloons being popped. Due to this The Last night of the Proms has a unique status. We have the sheet music to several of the pieces featured during the Last Night of the Proms

Other pieces widely associated with The Last Night of the Proms:
