The Washington Post March is a composition by John Philip Sousa. Sousa
wrote the piece in 1889, having been asked by the Paper The Washington
Post to write a piece for the ceremony of the newspaper's essay
contest. Sousa was also referred to as “The March King” following the
publication of The Washington Post March. These days the piece is part
of the standard marching band repertoire, and is consequently popular
all over the world. It is quite possible that Sousa actually intended
the piece to be known simply as The Washington Post, as, if you take a
look at the original cover below, you can recognize that the title and
the word “march” are clearly separated. | ![]() |
