Sir Peter Maxwell Davies studied at the University of Manchester and the Royal Manchester College of Music where he focussed on contemporay classical music. He was a condcutor and composer and wrote ten symphonies across a long career, the first being during 1973 - 76 (simply called Symphony No. 1) and the last in 2013 (Alla ricerca di Borromini).

Davies had strong polictical and environmental views. He wrote The Yellow Cake Revue in protest at plans to mine uranium ore in Orkney. Thiis suite contained his most famous instrumental piece, Farewell to Stromness.
