O How Joyfully is the English version of the popular German Christmas Carol “O du fröhliche”. The lyrics were written by Johannes Daniel Falk (1768-1826) in 1816. The melody appears to be based on a tune from Sicily. Johannes Daniel Falk was an author and theologian and was the founder of the idea of youth work. He wrote the text for "O How Joyfully" on Christmas 1816 for Orphans he was working with. The original title appears to have been "Allerdreifeiertagslied" (All three holiday-song), as each stanza speaks of the three holidays of the church (Christmas, Easter Whitsun).

O how joyfully,
 O how blessedly,
 Comes the glory of Christmastime!
To a world so lost in sin,
 Christ the Saviour, enters in:
Praise Him, Praise Him Christians, evermore!
