Artist and Writer: Claude Debussy (also known as Claude Achille Debussy)
La Cathédrale Engloutie (La Cathedrale Engloutie) by Claude Debussy
is one of 24 pieces from his Préludes (Preludes) piano cycle. There are
two books of Préludes, both containing twelve pieces each. La
Cathédrale Engloutie is featured in the first book of Préludes (premier
livre). All the pieces in the book are of a very impressionistic
nature, creating rich sondscapes that give ample food for the
listener's imagination. La Cathédrale Engloutie, which translates as
"The sunken Cathedral" refers to the legend of the sunken city of Ys
(in Brittany). There are several versions fo the story, but the main
thread evolves around the part that the city, built below sea-level and
protected by a dam, was flooded by the devil. In Debussy's piece, we
can here the sunken cathedral slowly emerging from the flood, as the
ringing of its bells becomes clearer and clearer, only for it to sink
back into the sea towards the end of the piece.
