Adele is a British singer/songwriter who has had phenomenal success within 2 years of breaking onto the scene in 2007 with the song "Hometown Glory". In 2008 the hit "Chasing Pavements" was released several weeks before the album itself, 19, and remained in the UK top 10 for several weeks.
After touring America Adele also found success there, with 19 certified Gold in 2009. Her second Album, 21 added to her debut success, as she managed to be the first act since the Beatles to have two albums and two songs in the top five in both the singles and the album charts. Adele has managed where many other British acts have failed: having major success in both the US and United Kingdom, and all that within a few years of her debut. Her break-through moment in America seems to have been her performance on SNL (Saturday Night Live), after which sales of 19 went to the top of the iTunes charts.
Adele has won a string of awards, including (slightly bizarrely) the Urban Music Award for "Best Jazz Act".
